Katie Shanahan Field Hockey
Katie’s passion for sports began at a young age when she signed up with a friend for their local hockey club. She quickly became invested in the sport and went on to represent England at multiple age levels.
“It completely took over my life and I loved it,” she said. “I made loads of friends along the way and was training for 25 hours a week. I even traveled the world with England Hockey, which was just amazing! Sport has always been a big part of my life; my family are big fans of football and rugby. I would always be in the back garden playing cricket with my brother, and whenever there was an opportunity to play sports at school or university, I would try to do so.”
Both schools that Katie attended had a strong focus on hockey, and when she later studied at Loughborough University, it seemed only right that she continued to play. At one point, she was playing for up to five teams per week, including her local teams, county, regional, and national. She also gained incredible experience while on a hockey scholarship at UNC in North Carolina and playing for the Rockingham Redbacks in Western Australia, where she found a way to travel the world while playing the sport she loved.
However, her playing career came to an end after sustaining a head injury from a ball, which resulted in plastic surgery, concussion, and spinal repair.
