Since her childhood, McGovern would go to Wicklow on holidays. ‘Since I was a kid, I would come down [to Wicklow] on holidays. We’re lucky enough as a family to have a house down here now and we’ve been coming over whenever we can for holidays and weekends.’

Nuala is married to Tristan Agates, a banker.

In March 2020, she travelled to Ireland with her husband to visit family before Covid-19 restrictions were put in place. However, after developing a cough, she was advised to self-isolate, instead of returning to London.

McGovern hosts a two hour daily radio programme called OS on BBC World Service. She is also an established TV presenter on BBC World News and BBC News.

Nuala joined the BBC in 2009, first presenting and producing World Have Your Say on BBC World Service before moving to Newsday. She has also presented the 11:00 GMT version of Outside Source for two years.


Prior to joining the BBC, she worked for New York’s flagship public radio station, WNYC, for nine years, serving as an Executive Producer for The Brian Lehrer Show which won a George Foster Peabody award for excellence in broadcasting. She was also the founding producer of Brian Lehrer Live: Where Web Video Meets the Issues.

Nuala has covered and managed major international events including the election coverage in the run up to the presidency of Barack Obama in 2008. She has also acted as a moderator at WeMedia’s technology conference in Miami, the CIVICUS World Assembly in Montreal and at the SuperPower Nation, an online event led by BBC World Service.

McGovern has given lectures surrounding radio and social media for the Public Radio Directors Association, New York University and has travelled to Uganda on a Gatekeepers’ Fellowship from the International Reporting Project at Johns Hopkins University. She has also worked in Italy, New York and now London.

McGovern began working in her father’s pub in Dublin. “I’ve had many, many jobs beginning in my father’s pub in Dublin which possibly was the foundation for a career in journalism. People, stories, the latest news all with some wonderful wit and warmth. When I visit the pub now, some of the same people are still there 40 years later… still telling stories.”

She has also been an ice cream server, a handbag seller, a cocktail waitress and an English teacher.
