The former Washington and Brussels Bureau Chief was appointed Regional Editor for the BBC World Service Europe and Americas Region. Assuming the role in August 2019, he provides managerial and editorial leadership to nearly 300 BBC World Service staff working for the Russian, Ukraine, Serbian, Azerbaijani as well as Mundo (Spanish), and Brasil services.
Having been working at BBC for almost three decades, Wilson has held varied editorial posts around the world. He started as a local radio reporter in the southeast of England, and later went on to serve as a newsroom sub-editor, a current-affairs program producer, and a presenter at BBC World Service, additionally becoming a TV news field producer
Between 2005- 2007, he worked as BBC News Middle East Bureaux Editor, where he oversaw coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the aftermath of the war in Iraq. He also doubled up as the senior BBC manager on the ground handling for four months the networks’ response to the kidnapping of its Gaza correspondent, Alan Johnston.
Working as Americas Bureaux Editor based in Washington, he was in charge of BBC’s reporting of Barack Obama’s two presidential election victories, the Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Sandy, and other breaking stories. Wilson then moved to Brussels in 2013 as Europe Bureaux Editor, during which he took charge of coverage of the Ukraine crisis, the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels, the refugee crisis, and Europe’s reaction to the Brexit referendum. He is also currently the Acting Regional Editor for BBC News Persian in London.
He was among the BBC team that won an International Emmy Award in 2006 for coverage of the conflict in Lebanon and was also a 2008 Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University.
