Rose is the daughter of the late Mr. Rodger HJ Neill and Mrs. Doreen Neill Johnston. Her mom passed on in May 2016. Around 200 mourners gathered in Kilmood Parish Church to pay their respects to the 85-year-old, who died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Ms. Neill-Johnston had been the wife of the late Roger HJ Neill and Edward I Johnston. She was also a mother to Maxine and Peter as well as a grandmother.
Doreen’s first husband Roger owned a shipping and coal-importing company.
“My parents threw the most fantastic parties and they made sure that as children we really enjoyed our lives to the full,” Rose said in 2014.
“We were taken to the races, hunting, shooting, boating, fishing, traveling… it was idyllic.”
“Growing up in Bangor with my older brother and sister, Peter and Maxine, I had a terrific childhood. Mum was always very close to all of us – and still is today. She was a stay-at-home mum, but a very pretty, glamorous one. I suppose she remembered the war, when food and clothes were rationed, and then came the Sixties, with all its high fashion and liberation and fun,” Rose added.
Her father was diagnosed with cancer and died six months later.
“Mum came through losing dad in a very dignified way; she did her mourning privately and got on with her life. Looking back, I’m glad that I feel we gave her good support. But that turned out to be a very difficult and traumatic period for us all because of my dad’s death,” she said.

Rose’s husband suffered a heart attack. “When my husband Ivan suffered a heart attack, mum was a rock. She was at the hospital as soon as she heard,” she said.
Prior to getting married to Ivan, Rose was married to John Magill, a senior engineer for 12 years. Ivan was also married and went through a divorce.

She began her broadcasting career in 1977. Her role included presenting children’s educational programs and newscasting for Ulster Television. She also worked as a continuity announcer and co-presented Sportscast with Jackie Fullerton.
Rose moved to BBC Northern Ireland in 1984 to co-present the flagship news program Inside Ulster alongside Sean Rafferty and went on to present its replacement BBC Newsline. She also presented a daily three-hour show on BBC Radio Ulster. From 2002 to 2008, she was involved in writing and presenting a series of medical documentaries. She also contributed to various BBC Northern Ireland programs including Children in Need coverage. She left BBC Northern Ireland in August 2008.
In 2009, Rose presented a documentary on the RMS Titanic for UTV, and latterly returned to the station as a freelance newsreader and in-vision continuity announcer. In May 2014, she was appointed as the main anchor for UTV Live, alongside Paul Clark.
Additionally, Rose is an honorary vice-patron of Cancer Focus Northern Ireland and Chairperson of the Riding for the Disabled Association.
