Brown is the daughter of John Y. Brown Jr. and Phyllis George. She is also the granddaughter of politician John Y. Brown Sr. Her father, John Y. Brown Jr. was a businessman and former Governor of Kentucky. He served as the 55th governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983. He is also best known for building Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) into a multimillion-dollar restaurant chain.
Her mother, Phyllis George was a former Miss America, businesswoman, actress and a sportscaster. She won Miss Texas in 1970 and was crowned Miss America 1971. She was also hired as a reporter and co-host of the CBS Sports pre-show, The NFL Today, in 1975. From 1979 to 1983, she served as the First Lady of Kentucky.
Brown’s parents divorced in 1996 after 17 years of marriage, when Brown was 13. Her mother died at age 70, of complications from polycythemia vera on May 14, 2020 at the Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

Most recently, Brown covered President Donald Trump and his administration for all of the network’s programs and platforms. Her reporting on the Trump administration has covered key moments such as two impeachment proceedings, the Covid pandemic, the controversial travel ban and child separation policies, missile strikes in Syria and the firing of FBI Director James Comey. She was also a lead reporter on the Mueller investigation, looking at Russia’s interference in the US election and whether the president’s campaign played any role, as well as the possibility of obstruction of justice.
Previously, she served as the network’s Justice and Supreme Court correspondent covering law enforcement, national security and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Brown began her career at ABC7/WJLA-TV and NewsChannel8 in Washington D.C. While there she became a Sunday evening anchor and an Emmy®-nominated special projects reporter covering several national and international stories. She was one of the few local journalists to travel to earthquake-ravaged Haiti in January 2010 and later returned on her own to report on the rebuilding process in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas.
