John’s family is originally from Lamplugh. During an interview, he was asked, when you were 15 years old, which newspaper did your family get, and did you read it? John said, “the Daily Express for my mother and The Guardian for my dad. In the end, they compromised on The Daily Telegraph and a daily row over its political coverage. I sought solace in the NME. So anorak-like was my knowledge of depressing new-wave music that I could complete the crossword in 10 minutes.”

Ray lives in London with his wife and children. In March 2020, he was put in isolation over coronavirus.

“My son had also been poorly, running a temperature,” he said.

“He’s exactly the age when kids are supposed to have mild fevers, but to be on the safe side my wife rang our local surgery.

“My son and I were told to self-isolate and to take a coronavirus test.”

After five days holed up in his London home, Ray tested negative for the virus and was cleared to return to his everyday life.

He added: “It’s hard to isolate yourself and toddler in a small house from three other members of the family.”

John is a Correspondent for ITV News. He was formerly Africa Correspondent, Middle East Correspondent, and China Correspondent.


In November 2019, John was recognized by the Association for International Broadcasting for his reporting of the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prior to that, he was the lead correspondent on the ITV News series, Fighting Famine which took the AIB award for continuing news coverage in 2017. He also won the One World Media Women’s Rights in Africa Award in June 2016 with the ITV On Assignment team for ‘Vicky’s Story’ highlighting the scale of domestic abuse in South Africa.

John took up his post as Africa Correspondent in January 2015 following two years based in London as ITN’s Diplomatic Correspondent.

From September 2010, John was ITV News’ Middle East Correspondent. He covered the Arab Spring reporting from Egypt, Libya, Syria, Bahrain, and Tunisia. He was also the first Western TV journalist to report from inside Syria’s borders at the start of the war.

In 2006, John went to Beijing to open ITN’s China Bureau. He received an Emmy and a BAFTA for ITN’s coverage of the 2008 Chinese earthquake. His expose of Chinese mining practices won the 2007 Foreign Press Association Media Award for TV News Story of the Year.

John joined ITV as Senior Political Correspondent from Sky News. Prior to this, he was Political Editor at West Country Television following positions at the Western Daily Press, BBC Devon, and the Warrington Guardian.
