Jean-Pierre was born to Haitian parents in Fort-de-France, Martinique. Her family immigrated to New York City when she was 5 years old. She has cited her youth in a Haitian immigrant community as a major influence on her life, which she recounted in her 2019 book Moving Forward: A Story of Hope, Hard Work, and the Promise of America.
Although her father had an engineering degree, he worked as a taxi driver. Her mother worked as a home health aide. She grew up in Queens.
“They came here for the American dream that in many ways eluded them,” Jean-Pierre said in an interview with PBS. “They still live to check, but in their eyes, because I made it to the White House because their daughter went to Columbia, they have received it.”
Jean-Pierre is the oldest of three children. She is eight years older than her sister and 10 years older than her brother.
“I had to take care of my siblings while my parents were working six, seven days a week,” Jean-Pierre told PBS. “I was pretty young when they were toddlers, and make sure their food was cooked, make sure diapers were changed because they had to provide for the family.
“And all of that heaviness, all of that responsibility led to some dark times as well.”

Jean-Pierre is openly gay.
“I came out to my Mom when I was 16 years old. The revolted look on her face sent me running back into the proverbial closet and slamming the door shut. After that, my sexuality became a family secret and it would stay that way for years,” she wrote.
“I dated, but I hid those relationships from my family. Just as American society has evolved over the course of the past couple of decades to embrace the LGBTQ community (never forgetting we still have work to do), my family has evolved to embrace my membership in it,” she added.

Jean-Pierre reportedly lives with her partner, CNN national correspondent Suzanne Malveaux. The couple has an eight-year-old adopted daughter, Soleil and they live in Washington D.C.
Malveaux was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan. She also attended Harvard University, earning a degree in Sociology, before attending Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Some of her career highlights include co-anchoring CNN’s Around the World and editions of the CNN newsroom. She also served as a White House correspondent and as a primary substitute to Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room.
“I’m proud to be an out Black Queer woman and I have been for quite some time. I’m happy to say, my Mother is now proud of ALL of who I am; she loves my partner and she loves being a doting grandmother to the daughter we are raising,” Jean-Pierre said.

On May 5, 2022, President Joe Biden announced that Karine will be taking over from Jen Psaki as White House press secretary, making her the first Black woman and open member of the LGBTQ+ community to hold the position. She will step into the role on May 13, 2022.
“Karine not only brings the experience, talent, and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people,” Biden said in a statement.
Prior to her position on the communications team, Karine already built up a notable career. During the 2020 election, she served as a senior adviser to candidate Biden as well as chief of staff to current Vice President Kamala Harris. Before that, she held a position in the Obama-Biden administration and served as a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.
Back in May 2021, Karine became the first openly gay woman to lead a White House press briefing. “It’s a real honor to just be standing here today,” she said at the time. “I appreciate the historic nature, I really do. But I believe that being behind this podium, being in this room, being in this building, is not about one person; it’s about what we do on behalf of the American people. Clearly, the president believes in representation matters, and I appreciate him giving me this opportunity.”
