“When I started the accent was a huge problem and I was sent to the Royal Academy of Drama for speech lessons. They were unsuccessful. My accent is part of who I am and I work for an international broadcaster and it’s a good reflection of the newsroom, which is very international.”

Lucy Hockings Black Panther

Hockings featured in the 2018 film Black Panther reading a “news report” announcing the accession of hero T’Challa to the throne of Wakanda.

Marvel approached her to feature in the film through the BBC. She filmed the segment in quite a rush during a regular day at the office.

“I came off air from a live show and had to be in air again 20 minutes later doing interviews and breaking news,” Hockings recalled.

She knew a little about Black Panther through her children, but wasn’t sure how to pronounce the names of Wakandan names and places.

“There was someone in our technical gallery on YouTube telling me how to say things like Wakanda and T’Challa,” Hockings said.”

She’d been instructed to read the story just like any other. She did three takes, refining her pronunciation each time, before carrying on with her regular day.

Hockings saw the film for the first time at the cinema with her husband, some friends and “a whole pile of kids”.

“I’d told them that I might be in the movie but not to expect too much. I’d probably just be on a television screen in the back of a shot, a blink and you’d miss me, kind of thing.”

“We all got such a surprise when my voice came on and then you see Black Panther watching me at the beginning of the film. The kids were pointing and laughing, they were so delighted … I was stunned.”

“When we left the cinema, the kids kept on saying ‘You’re part of the Marvel Universe now Mum, that’s really cool.'”
