Hughes married Kristen Welker on March 4, 2017 at Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. Kristen had previously told John that she would be in Washington D.C. for only 24 hours and John met her there, took her to the steps of Lincoln Memorial and popped the question. In an interview, he told the New York Times;
“I wanted to ask her outside in a place you could walk by years later and tell your kids that this was the spot we got engaged,”
John Hughes Kristen Welker Struggles with Infertility
Hughes’ wife, Kristen was 40 years when they got married in 2017 and they immediately started to try to have a baby. It didn’t work immediately so they thought they should go to a doctor as a precaution. After a visit to the doctor, Kristen was advised by her fertility specialist to try to conceive through IVF or in vitro fertilization. Her uterus lining was too thin to carry a child. At first she thought that the problem could be fixed.
“And I thought, ‘Okay, well, let’s fix it. There has to be something that we can do to fix this,'”
But after an array of various tests and appointments over the timespan of two years, Kristen then accepted that she would not be able to carry a child on her own. The couple did not give up on their dream of becoming parents and they decided to go through surrogacy.
“Our surrogate has been amazing.” “I can’t explain just how wonderful she’s been,” Hughes said. “For her this was about giving something to us that she felt a deep connection to.” And though the first transfer to the surrogate ended up being unsuccessful, their surrogate finally became pregnant and they are expecting their first child in June 2021.
