Who are Mikala Jones’ Parents? Mikala was the son of Violet Jones-Medusky (mother) and Dr. Jones (father). His father was a dentist and an accomplished surfer and surf photographer who wanted his kids to have every opportunity to ride good waves.
In May 2004, Mikala’s mother was diagnosed with ALS. A longtime surfer, triathlete, and runner, the diagnosis was a major blow. And for seven years Mikala and his family watched as the disease made physical tasks more and more difficult for his mother. During her battle with ALS, Violet was a beacon of hope, becoming involved in Hawaii’s ALS community and raising awareness and funds for ALS programs. Sadly, in 2011 she passed due to ALS-related circumstances, and as per her request funds from her estate were used to found ALS Ohana of Hawaii. ALS Ohana of Hawaii’s mission is to improve the quality of life of those living with ALS and their families in Hawaii.

Jones, a 44-year-old Hawaiian pro surfer died following a fatal accident while surfing in Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands on Sunday 9th July 2023. Jones was staying at a Mentawai Islands resort with his family when he headed out for a surf at about 9.15 am. According to surfing news website Surfline, Jones suffered a wound to his inside left groin which was likely caused by his surfboard fin. Surfline said the deep cut would have likely severed his femoral artery causing him to bleed out. He was taken by boat to a nearby pier. However, they were unable to save him.
Jones’ daughter Isabella wrote on Instagram her “dad got into a bad surfing accident and didn’t make it,” adding that she is “in so much disbelief.”
She paid tribute to her father, sharing photos with him from her childhood and writing, “I wish you were still here with us, you weren’t supposed to leave yet. This is too soon.”
