Kyung Lah Parents

Lah was born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Chicago. She immigrated to the US with her parents when she was four years old and was raised in a household that was Korean on the inside and struggled to understand America on the outside.

Lah watched the assumptions of non-Korean customers walk up to their convenience store counter, mocking how her parents spoke English to their faces. Both of her parents with their master’s degrees had little value to their customers, who viewed them as simply, stupid.

“My parents succeeded in both my brother and I speaking crisp, accent-less English. My brother is a lawyer, and I’m a journalist, working in a profession where my adopted language is protected under the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution,” Lah says.

Some of her earliest memories of her mother are of her under the cheap neon lights of her parents’ little corner store, waving her hands in the air as if conducting an orchestra of one–me.

“They don’t see us,” her mother would say. “They don’t know how smart we are, they don’t know our family backgrounds, and they don’t know.” Her mother shared her fears that something could happen at the store – not because of the money in the cash register or the beer on the shelves, but because they were Korean.

“They don’t like how we look,” she often warned Lah.

Lah has a thirteen-year-old daughter with her husband Curtis Vogel. In March 2021, she wrote an article explaining how her daughter’s simple words reminded her why Asian Americans should be proud.

“I was reminded of this when my daughter, age 11, a product of her Korean American mother and a White rural Southern father, wrote a letter to herself,” Lah wrote.

She also has other kids. However, not much is known about them.

“Like most parents, my husband and I have struggled with how to keep our young kids busy during the pandemic without tearing our hair out,” she also wrote.
