The long-serving and experienced journalist joined the BBC World Service in 1988. Years later he became the organization’s Sri Lanka Correspondent, a post he served between 1990–1992 based in Colombo, during which he was covering the Sri Lankan civil war and other South Asian stories including the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and the rise of Hindu nationalism.
Based in Washington, D.C. as BBC State Department Correspondent he covered crises in Haiti and North Korea and traveled around the world with the US Secretary of State between 1994 and 1997. Additionally, Morris also reported on the Dayton Agreement and the 1996 United States presidential election.
Morris covered and reported the 1999 İzmit earthquake, the arrest, and the trial of the Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Öcalan while serving as BBC Turkey Correspondent based initially in Ankara and later opening the BBC’s new bureau in Istanbul.
He also served as BBC Europe Correspondent
With a wealth of experience drawn from various reporting localities, he authored The New Turkey, a book that examines the potential and the problems of the far-reaching political and economic reforms being undertaken in what he describes as a second revolution in Turkey and was published by Granta in 2005.
His other played roles at BBC include; World Affairs Correspondent based in London from 2005 to 2007, reporting from conflict zones in Iraq, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, and the Balkans, BBC’s South Asia Correspondent based in Delhi, covering India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, before returning to Brussels in 2011.
Since November 2016 Chris writes and broadcasts on Brexit; A Guide for the Perplexed on BBC Radio 4, fake news, and other issues for BBC Reality Check.
