Shaun joined the BBC as a trainee journalist in 1990. He worked as a reporter and presenter, first on the local news programme Points West, based in Bristol, before moving to London where he was the BBC’s political editor and presenter of Around Westminster on BBC2. In 2001, he joined the team of national political correspondents.
In 2005, Shaun joined The World This Weekend and was the main presenter of that programme and the Friday edition of The World at One until 2014. Although he is no longer the main presenter of The World This Weekend and The World at One, Shaun will continue to present both programmes occasionally plus documentaries on Radio 4. In the run-up to the General Election, he will also be doing political reporting in Westminster and around the UK for The World at One.
Ley is a longtime fan of the BBC series Doctor Who and in 2011 he presented and narrated When Worlds Collide, a documentary accompanying the DVD release of The Happiness Patrol, which looked into the series’ political and ideological influences over the years.

In what was termed as the hottest day of the year, with the temperature of 28.3C in Northolt, West London, Shaun was captured in the camera wearing shorts while presenting late-night news in June 2021.
However, he still maintained a professional upper-half attire and was wearing a smart jacket and tie. Viewers were quick to make fun of his attire on social media.
One wrote: “Is BBC news reader Shaun Ley keeping his cool by wearing shorts? And if so, were viewers meant to find out? #bbcnews”
A second added: “Shaun Ley on the BBC is wearing shorts and trainers under his suit rn LOOOOOOOOL the cameraman accidentally panned past his desk from the side.”
