It was De Piero who played matchmaker for Kate and Derek, although it took some convincing. Initially, Derek was hesitant, stating that he didn’t want to go out with a high-maintenance TV bimbo, but De Piero assured him that Kate was not like that. Derek soon realized that Kate was fiercely intelligent.
The couple was introduced over drinks at the London hotel Claridge’s, but the early signs were not auspicious. She initially ignored Derek and although he asked her out on a date, he then canceled it to serve wine at an amateur watercolor painting exhibition at his church. Kate later recalled that she thought it was a wind-up, but showed up anyway and found Derek serving wine to the congregation in a salmon-pink jumper.
