After studying Russian at Oxford and attending the Cardiff School of Journalism, Whewell began his career in international journalism closer to home, working for the Sheffield Morning Telegraph in 1984, then the Sheffield Star.

Specializing in Russian affairs, he joined BBC as a talks writer at Bush House. Between 1990 and 1993 he was the BBC World Service Moscow Correspondent and was one among the only three Western journalists to be present throughout the three-day siege of the Russian parliament’s White House in 1993, a situation indeed demanded a steady nerve to broadcast from the building. Tim says at one point he had to work underneath a table for fear of snipers. He later returned to the BBC World Service at Bush House.

His work has also included presenting and producing for BBC Radio Five Live’s morning program known as The Magazine. The feature, ‘Mad Magazines‘, looked at eccentric publications worldwide and made for cult listening. He made a three-part radio documentary series, Dancing with the Russian Bear, that depicted how Russia and the West came to fear one another again.

Covering across Continents, he investigated Uganda’s involvement in the long-running civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Additionally, he also visited Yemen to examine the claim it was successfully using “Islamic dialogue” to fight terror. Extending his work, he traveled to Poland to examine the impact an exodus of Polish workers had on the country they left behind. Most recently Whewell visited Turkey to investigate if the rise of a new social class threatens Turkey’s secular elite which has run the country for 80 years.

His report on child sacrifices in Uganda for BBC Radio 4’s Crossing Continents won the 2010 Best Radio Documentary One World Media Award.
