Back in 2000, he joined The Times as a graduate trainee, working on the diary, foreign desk, and as a general reporter.
In 2005 he worked for The Washington Post in Westminster covering the George W Bush White House and in New Orleans on Hurricane Katrina during the summer, where he won the Laurence Stern fellowship. Sam joined The Times’ lobby team as Chief Political Correspondent and was later promoted to Deputy Political Editor in November 2010.
He also served as banking editor of The Times in 2012, during which he covered the transition from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown, the financial crisis, the tensions of the coalition government, and the lead-up to and aftermath of Brexit. Additionally, Sam covered seven general elections and three referendums.
During his tenure at The Times, he contributed to the 2010 The Times Guide to the House of Commons. His portrait of the 2017 Westminster attack was used on the front cover of the newspaper.
Sam also featured in the Daily Mirror and other outlets following his reaction to Boris Johnson ruling himself out in the 2016 Conservative Party leadership election.
Additionally, Sam regularly presented BBC Radio 4’s Week in Westminster while still at The Times and also appeared as a paper reviewer on BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show, Politics Live, and appeared on ABC’s Lateline program in March 2012. Some of the other programs he appeared in include ABC’s Insiders program on 2 May 2010 alongside future Sky News colleague Adam Boulton.
