Richardson has been part of WCVB’s award-winning news team for more than two decades having joined the station in 1996 as a general assignment reporter. Over the course of her distinguished career, she has covered both Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama during their Martha’s Vineyard vacations; and she helped lead coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings, the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the Boston archdiocese’s sex abuse scandal. In addition, she has covered every blizzard and rare tornado to hit New England.
Richardson is one of the few journalists to personally speak to Market Basket CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas, during a six-week supermarket strike across the region. During her tenure at WCVB, Richardson has held several roles including serving as an original co-anchor of the weekend EyeOpener when it launched. Then, her numerous sources and ability to break news stories led her from the anchor desk to the “5 Investigates” team for several years before transitioning to general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for WCVB’s various newscasts.
Richardson’s career has landed her at all #1 network affiliates. Prior to WCVB, she worked at KING-TV, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, WA; WJAR-TV, the NBC station in Providence, RI; and WMUR-TV, the ABC affiliate in Manchester, NH. While at KING-TV in 1994, Richardson was a contributing reporter on “The Today Show,” and during a week-long international reporting assignment to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam she produced a three-part series called Capitalism vs Communism. The stories examined the impact of trade between Vietnam, the Pacific Northwest, and Vancouver British Columbia.
While at WJAR-TV from 1992-1994, Richardson was involved in that station’s “Tuesday’s Child” segments and appeared on the soap opera “Another World” in a dancing scene for a behind-the-scenes story about life as a soap star.
In 1990, Richardson was the recipient of WCVB’s Leo Beranek Fellowship which brought her to NewsCenter 5 as a freelance news assistant, and it was at WCVB that Richardson officially launched her career in broadcasting as an intern for CityLine, WCVB’s urban news program, in 1986.
Boston Magazine previously named Richardson one of “The 50 Most Intriguing Women in Boston.” She has also graced the cover of Northeastern University Alumni Magazine and was the first honoree of the University’s “Medallion Award.” The award recognizes alumni committed to the community while also making great professional strides. Richardson remains an active member of the University’s Board.
In an effort to continuously serve the community on and off camera, Richardson has emceed the tribute day honoring tennis commentator Bud Collins at the Sportsmen’s Tennis Club, prior to his passing. For over a decade, she has emceed Boston’s annual “Duckling Day” Mother’s Day festivities and parade, sponsored by the Friends of the Public Garden and the Boston Parks & Recreation Department. Richardson is on the board of UNICEF and a passionate supporter of The Home For Little Wanderers, Catholic Charities, The Ellie Fund, and her local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. She also calls herself a mentor in motion and loves how her job constantly introduces her to new people.
