Peter and his wife Jessica Rowe struggled with fertility issues after tying the knot back in 2004.
“Aged 33, and newly married, I’d wrongly assumed that becoming pregnant would be easy,” his wife wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We had a huge mortgage with a perfect baby room set aside, but suddenly there was a glitch in our plan: after two years of trying, my body was letting me down.”
Concerned that time was against them, Peter and Jess saw a specialist who diagnosed Jess with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which reduces the frequency with which a woman ovulates and produces eggs.
“So I thought, yeah OK, we’ll do IVF and it will be an inconvenience, but at the end, we will have a baby,” Jess wrote in her memoir Is This My Beautiful Life?
The couple conceived their first child Allegra Penelope Overton through IVF. However, their second daughter Giselle Charlotte Overton was conceived naturally.

Overton is the Chief newsreader for 9News Sydney and a contributor for 60 Minutes Australia. He became the chief newsreader for Sydney’s 6 pm edition of Nine News in January 2009. He returned to the Nine newsroom after spending eight years as a reporter for 60 Minutes. Prior to joining 60 Minutes, Overton spent 10 years with Nine News as a reporter and regular presenter.
Overton completed a Bachelor of Economics degree at Macquarie University. At the university he received his first break in the media, gaining work experience at Sydney radio station 2UE in 1985, soon progressing to an on-air role. He continued this role until 1987 when he moved to Australia’s first satellite television channel, Sky Channel where he spent four years reporting and presenting.
In 1991, Overton joined Channel Nine in Sydney as a sports reporter for National Nine News. He co-anchored Channel Nine’s coverage of the Thredbo disaster from the Sydney studios with Tracy Grimshaw. He also anchored the major Super League ARL court decisions.
While anchoring Nine’s major nightly news bulletin, Overton has seen the hotly contested 6 pm news service rise to number one in Sydney, achieving that in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. This was capped off by a TV Week Logie Award in 2012 for Most Outstanding News Coverage for the Queensland floods – an award shared across TODAY, ACA, and News. Overton accepted another Logie Award for the Nine News team in 2014 for Most Outstanding News coverage of the Blue Mountains bushfires. He continues to contribute special reports for 60 Minutes and hosts the weekly feedback section of the program.
