His parents met at a Northwestern party in 1955 when JoAnn overheard someone ask Burton Sr. what he would like to drink. When he responded by asking for a glass of milk, she couldn’t believe it. It was a silly moment that kicked off a relationship that lasted nearly half a century, but the way he asked for what he wanted without caring about perception stuck with JoAnn.
“It was just something very special about him. It’s like peacefulness, and that’s what drew me to him. But it wasn’t an arrogant self-assurance,” she said. “It was very humble, but ‘This is what I believe. This is my walk, and I’m not going to deviate from it or anything.’ So I said to myself, ‘I have to keep my eye on this guy.'”
Burton Sr. died from multiple myeloma in 2003.

Paul has four siblings Ron Burton Jr., Elizabeth Scott, Steve Burton, and Phillip Burton. Ron Burton Jr. is a director of community relations for the Red Sox. His other brother Steve Burton is the Sports Director for WBZ-TV and WSBK-TV in Boston. He lives in the Boston area with his wife Virginia and four children.

Paul is married to his wife Sheila. The couple is blessed with two boys Pierce and Pruitt Burton. Pruitt was born on June 9, 2021.
On April 16, 2013, Paul’s wife recorded a video of chaos in the Grandstands after the explosions. Paul was running in the Boston Marathon while his wife was in the grandstand seating area watching runners cross the finish line. The two explosions, just seconds apart, went off at 2:50 p.m. In the video, two blasts were heard followed by chaos as spectators cleared the seating area.

Burton is a general assignment reporter for WBZ-TV News. He joined the station as a participant in the “CBS News Development Program” and came from WLNE-TV in Providence, where he worked as a general assignment reporter since the spring of 2003.
Prior to becoming a journalist, Burton led a successful career as an athlete. From 1994-1997 he was an ALL Big Ten punter at Northwestern, taking part in two Big Ten Championships, and playing in both the 1996 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and the 1997 Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Burton also spent time in the NFL as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
In addition to his career, Burton is an associate pastor at Tremont Temple Baptist Church. He also serves as director of the Ron Burton Training Village, a youth sports camp founded by his father, Ron Burton, in 1985.
