Max has been with the paper since 2016 in the Moscow bureau as a reporter. He previously was a foreign affairs reporter for BuzzFeed News and a reporter for the Associated Press in Moscow. He has also been reporting from Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and across the ex-Soviet Union and Europe. On January 13, 2014, his news “Russia Expels American Journalist” became famous at the time.
In May 2017, Max won the Financial Times’s sixth annual Jones-Mauthner Memorial Prize, receiving a £5000 award. The prize recognizes and celebrates the tradition of journalistic excellence exemplified by the FT’s late foreign specialists JDF Jones and Robert Mauthner.
Financial Times editor Lionel Barber said Max’s winning story was “vintage revelatory journalism”. He said Max’s work, pursued over several months, “uncovered the story behind the rise of Otkritie, a little-known entity that has become one of Russia’s most powerful banks in spite of western sanctions.” His entry also included a comical account of a football World Cup of non-recognized countries, and a Lunch with the FT with a Russia Today anchor.
