Whitely is a Senior News Reporter at WFAA in Dallas, Fort Worth, and host of Inside Texas Politics, a weekly political television program that airs Sunday at 9 a.m. on ABC Channel 8. He is also co-hosting the new Y’all-itics political podcast.
In his 29-year career, Whitely has reported extensively on immigration issues along the U.S.– Mexico border, witnessed four executions of prison inmates on Texas’ Death Row, covered aviation matters with American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, the collapse of Enron, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, along with ten hurricanes, including Harvey which submerged Houston in 2017 and Katrina which crippled New Orleans in 2005.
Whitely has been honored with 22 Emmy Awards for his storytelling, four Edward R. Murrow Awards, and two dozen others from the Associated Press in Tennessee, Illinois, and Texas. He won the Emmy Award for Best General Assignment Reporter in Texas in 2018, 2017, 2010, and 2005.
Prior to joining WFAA-TV in February 2008, Whitely was a reporter at KHOU-TV in Houston. He also reported for KMOV-TV from 1998 to 2000. Whitely began his career as a reporter, writer, and assignment editor at WKRN News 2 in Nashville, Tennessee in 1990.
