She said: “It was about day three [of our holiday] and I’d packed this white dress and thought, ‘What have I got to lose?’ And so I proposed and he went: ‘Oh my God, that’s amazing, no.’ I was like, ‘We could get married on the beach on Friday, I’ve packed a dress.’ So he said yes to the proposal but no to [getting married there and then on the beach].”

The couple is blessed with two sons, Milo and Max, and they live in Kensington, London. Emily is a keen runner and a WellChild Celebrity Ambassador. She also speaks fluent French, Spanish, and Italian, and some Mandarin.

In a new two-part Channel 4 documentary called Andrew: The Problem Prince – which Maitlis executive produced – she describes the run-up to grilling the Duke of York over his relationship with pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. Indeed, so calamitous was the resulting tête-à-tête in November 2019 that the duke would afterward step down from public life.

Maitlis explained the trepidation she felt as she made her way to the Buckingham Palace ballroom where the meeting had been due to take place. She said: “I arrived at the palace with my huge bag. I ended up wearing this sort of military-style jacket.”

“I remember thinking he’ll like a military coat, he’s a man of the armed forces, he’ll appreciate that and then I start to feel actually just really sick and I dived into the loo. I just wanted the door shut, I wanted to have two seconds of going: ‘Where am I? Right, what’s going on? Where is my head?’

“I had to deal with the fact that I was about to ask this man, this royal, this prince about his sex life. I was thinking, ‘How do I not mess this up?’”

Maitlis was amongst the highest-paid BBC news and current affairs staff receiving a salary of £325,000 annually. However, after leaving BBC and heading to LBC, Maitlis has had a huge pay rise. One LBC insider told MailOnline that Maitlis will now be on ‘at least’ £ 400,000 a year, but it ‘could be more’ because of the number of projects she will work on.
