An argument had escalated into a horrific ordeal in which Ellie says her former partner twice grabbed her around the throat almost causing her to lose consciousness, tried to haul her onto the hotel balcony by her hair, and ordered her to sleep on the floor ‘like a dog’.
“I thought, that night, he would kill me, and I just wanted to let people know who had done it,” says Ellie.
“He wouldn’t let me email my mum and dad, but he allowed me to email myself. I was terrified but, in my fear, I thought that at least if he deletes it, somehow they will manage to find it.”
When Ellie met her partner in a Merseyside bar in August 2014, it seemed like she had finally met her Mr. Right. But she couldn’t have been more wrong.
“He was a dream,” she smiles. “He wouldn’t let me pay for anything, he would open the car door for me and he bought me thoughtful presents. We had our song, My Eyes Adored You, by Frankie Valli, so for Christmas, he bought me an original signed vinyl copy. And he made me laugh so much.
After around six, or seven months Ellie’s relationship took a different twist. The man who once loved her turned into her worst nightmare.
“He would call me fat and ugly, a whore, a slag, and told me he could have anyone. He made me feel like I wasn’t worthy, he undermined my confidence not as a person but as a woman so eventually I thought no one would want me.”
