Deborah is an award-winning, medically-qualified journalist who held the position of Health Correspondent at BBC Newsnight, where she was at the forefront of the programme’s coronavirus coverage. Before this, she was the Newsnight UK Correspondent, covering science, health and social policy.
Deborah’s formidable reputation as a journalist has led to several awards, including winning Health and Life Sciences Journalist of the Year at the British Journalism Awards 2019. Most recently, she exposed safeguarding concerns at the Tavistock Centre, an impactful story which went on to be reported widely.
Before Newsnight she had a successful career working across newspapers, TV, radio and academic journals. Deborah spent 10 years at the British Medical Journal, where she was their first Investigations Editor – the first post of its kind on a medical journal, establishing its reputation for conducting in-house and collaborative investigations with the likes of Panorama, Dispatches and File On 4 among others.
She has written for the Telegraph and Guardian, as well as reporting on science and health from Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana and Palestine. On top of her journalism, Deborah was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine at the University of Oxford.
