As the years passed, I came to see his “phone man” uniform — green thermos, massive lunchbox, ballcap, thick boots, sometimes a polo, sometimes long johns — as a symbol of grit. This was a man determined to make something of his life, determined to create opportunities for his kids and grandkids.”
He concluded by saying, “Every night as we said goodbye on the phone, Dad would tell me to hug Hernan, kiss the boys, and we’d say I love you. So … Dad … please hug Grandma and Grandpa … Aunt Peggy and Uncle Bob … Cousin Judy … roll around with your favorite pups Sissy and Cozy. We’ll be hugging again one day. Until then, I’ll be talking to you in heaven. It’s a long distance, but thankfully I know the best phone man.”
