He was also a lecturer in politics at the University College of North Wales, Bangor from 1973–1975 and a lecturer in politics from 1975–1992 at the University of Birmingham (School of Continuing Studies), where he is now an honorary professor.

Tony is also an author and he has written or edited 21 books. He has had leukemia. On 21 July 2008 he announced that, for health reasons, he would not stand again at the 2010 general election. He married Moira Phillips in 1973 in Oxford.

Wright is married to Poppy Mitchell-Rose, formerly a BBC and Reuters employee, special adviser (2010 to 2012) to Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, and currently a director at Freuds Communications.

On February 15, 2021 wright posted on Instagram that he and his wife were expecting a baby. Currently, he is on parental leave until November. However, he hasn’t shared any news about the new member of the family.

Wright serves as BBC Political Correspondent. He is also the author of Order, Order! Previously, he was the Chief Political Correspondent for BBC Radio 4, having been appointed to the position in March 2012. He became Washington Correspondent in December 2012 before moving back to London.

Prior to joining BBC as a political correspondent in March 2012, Wright had worked on a number of programmes, including The World at One, Today, PM, and The Daily Politics. He was appointed political correspondent along with Iain Watson as replacements for the departing James Hardy and Guto Harri.

He has also worked extensively for the BBC, covering stories around the world, including India, Africa, the United States, and mainland Europe. Currently, he focuses primarily on issues relating to British politics.
